Things to do for Mud Season in Crested Butte

Crested Butte, Colorado, is a beautiful mountain town known for its world-class skiing and outdoor recreation opportunities. But when the snow starts to melt and the ski season comes to an end, the town enters into what is known as “mud season.”

While this time of year may not be as busy as peak ski season, there are still plenty of things to do and see in Crested Butte during mud season.

Here are some of the top activities to enjoy in Crested Butte in 2023 during mud season:

    HIKING AND MOUNTAIN BIKING

Now that the snow is melting and the weather is getting warmer, mud season is the perfect opportunity to enjoy biking and hiking. While most trail destinations are closed, don’t worry because Hartman’s Rocks Recreational Area is available for your next adventure. Although it is not currently open, it is known for being among the first to open and is expected to open soon,  even though it’s subject to the unpredictable whims of Mother Nature, Hartman’s Rocks promises an unforgettable outdoor experience in the desert.
Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, the city of Gunnison, and Gunnison County, Hartman Rocks Recreation Area covers over 8,000 acres of public land, making it one of western Colorado’s hidden gems. With miles of trails and roads maintained by local Gunnison recreation groups, Hartman’s is just a few miles southwest of Gunnison, making it a convenient and exciting destination for your next mud season adventure. Get ready to gear up and conquer the epic trails of Hartman’s Rocks!

    FLY FISHING

Crested Butte is home to some of the best fly fishing in the country! If you’re a fishing enthusiast, you’ll be delighted to know that the nearby mountain streams, rivers, and lakes are teeming with Rainbow, Brown, Brook, and Cutthroat trout in the spring, summer, and fall. To help you make the most of your fishing adventure,  Crested Butte Angler  and  Dragonfly Anglers  are just a few of the excellent fishing shops and guide services available. So gear up, cast your line, and get ready to reel in some trophy-worthy catches amidst the scenic beauty of the mountains.

One of the most popular areas to fish on the Gunnison River is the Black Canyon. This section of the river is located within the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and offers a unique and challenging fishing experience. The canyon is known for its steep cliffs and towering walls that create a breathtaking backdrop for fishing. The river in this section is a little more challenging due to the fast-moving water, so it’s important to be cautious and prepared.

In addition, the hatchery that produces cold water fish known as the Roaring Judy Hatchery can be found in Gunnison County, located on the East River at the base of Flat Top mountain. It boasts the largest Kokanee Salmon run in the United States and has been in operation since 1963. A key goal of the hatchery staff is to conserve the cutthroat trout population. In 2016, following the Hayden Pass Wildfire, the hatchery rescued 158 district cutthroat trout from Hayden Creek. Biologists are currently working to spawn these fish to safeguard their distinct genetic lineage, which serves as a crucial link to Colorado’s angling history.

Moreover, due to the snowfall that occurred during the winter, the high alpine streams and lakes will only become accessible in early summer.

    HOT SPRINGS

After a long day of outdoor activities, there’s nothing quite like soaking in a hot spring. The area around Crested Butte is home to several hot springs, including the popular Mount Princeton Hot Springs Resort and the lesser-known Cottonwood Hot Springs. The distance from Crested Butte to Mount Princeton Hot Springs Resort is around 57 miles, which takes about an hour and a half by car. On the other hand, Cottonwood Hot Springs is located about 58 miles away from Crested Butte, which also takes around an hour and a half to reach by car. Both hot springs offer breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and are a perfect destination to relax and unwind after a day of adventure in the outdoors.
